Portugal has so many cool cities and places to offer to its tourists ( Porto, Algarve, Sintra, São Miguel Island…), but Lisbon is definitely THE most precious destination this country can brag about.
Lisbon is so much more than amazing and vivid architecture, beautiful people and rich art scene. Let’s see why!
1. It’s Cheap
It’s not just Lisbon, the whole country of Portugal is famously cheaper compared to its European neighbors.
Post Office wrote an article last year in which it rated Lisbon as the 6th cheapest city break in Europe, and the cheapest in Western Europe.
Lisbon has a famous and growing culinary reputation. Only last year, the city saw its three restaurants get awarded with a Michelin star: LAB by Sergi Arola, Loco, and Alma.
There are currently six one-star establishments in the city and one – Belcanto – with two.
3. The City With A Passion For Exploring And Discovery
Lisbon is known for its huge role in the Age of Discovery. Namely, the city was the starting place for dozens of exploratory voyages around the globe, with the most important one being Vasco da Gama’s expedition to India in 1497.
This is why Padrão dos Descobrimento, a large monument on the north bank of the Tagus that celebrates this moment, is a must!
4. Cute But Hard-Working Trams
Lisbon is adorned with century-old wooden trams and iron funiculars that crawl through the narrow streets and are one of the most prominent sights of the city.
These trams are nostalgic and they definitely bring joy to all who visit the capital of Portugal.
5. The Intimidating Gothic Monastery Jerónimos Monastery
Both the Jerónimos Monastery and the nearby Tower of Belém are Unesco World Heritage Sites. This establishment includes a delicate Gothic chapel, in which some of Portugal’s greatest historical figures are entombed.
It’s rather scary but it’s a must!
6. Street Art
The city of Lisbon is a HUGE fan of street art.

Last but not least on our list is the intimidatingly big Vasco da Gama Bridge.
