Choosing a vacation destination is one of the most exciting moments in the work-driven world we live in, and getting there and spending a week or two on a tropical beach in paradise is definitely nothing to complain about.
However, the environment has plenty to complain about, thanks to reckless human activity, primarily industrial, as well as activity from party goers and ignorant tourists, who dump their garbage on the beach to be picked up by the ocean.
Such careless behaviour and business-as-usual attitude from corporations that use the ocean as a garbage dump has led record-breaking sailor Ellen MacArthur and her foundation to produce a report at the World Economic Forum that says by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish!
“The ocean is expected to contain one tonne of plastic for every three tonnes of fish by 2025, and by 2050, more plastics than fish,” said MacArthur.
Not only will ocean be loaded with plastic bottles that take a while to break down, but when plastic breaks down it releases toxic chemicals that are consumed by fish, later making their way into the human food chain.
As alarming as this may sound, raising awareness on the issue is crucial if we want to leave our children and grandchildren a place to take a summer vacation!
So next time you’re down at the Caribbean, take a moment to reflect on the fact that reckless human activity is not only destroying the environment, but it’s also completely unnecessary and can be avoided with very little effort that is required to use a proper garbage can to dispose of plastic instead of dumping it in the sea.
